How to Prep for Rain (or Snow) During Your New York Elopement

If you’re planning an elopement in Northern New York, you know that the weather can be unpredictable. I an definitely of the mindset that here’s no such thing as “bad” weather, just unpreparedness. While you might be hoping for a sunny day to say your vows and take some stunning photos, rain (or snow during certain times of the year) is always a possibility. Don’t let “bad” weather ruin your special day – let me help you understand what you can do to prepare and fully embrace your wedding day. Even if it does rain, you can still have a beautiful and memorable day with your partner. Here are some tips for preparing for all kinds of weather on your wedding day in Northern New York:

Embrace the shit out of it: Yep, you heard me right. While it might be disappointing to have rain or snow on your elopement day, remember that Northern New York is truly stunning in all weather types. I strongly encourage you to embrace it as part of your unique experience. The weather can add moody and romantic elements to your photos, and you’ll have a unique story to tell for years to come.
Absolutely dress appropriately: If you’re expecting rain or snow, it is imperative that you dress appropriately for the weather conditions. Choose waterproof or water-resistant clothing and shoes, and consider bringing an umbrella or raincoat for added protection. Even if you’re not expecting bad weather, and you plan on being outside for any part of your celebration, absolutely make sure to have emergency gear (rain jackets, blankets, handwarmers, etc.) packed just in case! Weather can turn very quickly in the north country, and it’s better to be safe versus sorry!
Choose the right location but be ready to be flexible: When planning your elopement in Northern New York, consider choosing a location that will still be beautiful even in bad weather. For example, the Adirondack Mountains or the Thousand Islands region can look stunning even on a rainy day, while a cityscape would be gorgeous in the late evening with all the lights and reflections. That being said, if the weather is dangerous, be ready to pivot plans to your backup plan. More on that in number 5.
Don’t be afraid to bring props or extra gear: Sometimes, bad weather gives you the opportunity to capture portraits that you would have otherwise missed. For example, if you’re expecting rain, consider bringing some colorful umbrellas to add some fun and personality to your photos. In the snow, consider bringing cozy blankets or hot drinks to keep you warm. Imagine spending a part of your wedding day curled up with your partner and thermos filled with your favorite hot beverage.
Be flexible: I do my best to educate all of my couples on anything and everything wedding and elopement planning related. This is no exception. If the weather is dangerous on your elopement day (think lake effect snow impacting travel, high velocity winds, or other weather situations that are dangerous to be out in), you’re gonna need to have a degree of flexibility with your plans. Always have a contingency or back-up plan. Whether that be an indoor location, a nearby alternative, or a back-up date, have something in place. Remember, the most important thing is that you’re marrying the love of your life – the weather is just a small part of the day.

If you plan on being outdoors for your elopement, forego the heels and strap on some boots. Not only will you be significantly more comfortable, but you’ll be able to adventure around more easily!

Out of season cold temperatures can also be a possibility during certain times of the year, so definitely make sure to pack a jacket (or two) that you wouldn’t mind being photographed in!

I will never be upset should it rain on your wedding day. The lighting is better, the sky is moodier, and it just gives a way more romantic vibe versus a blue sky (imho).

Don’t be afraid to play in the weather either! It can make for some amazing moments between you and your partner!
